NYC Experience Assignment
I received a postcard invitation and bookmark from Printed Matter. The instructions were to try out a few different places in Chelsea near the water: the art book store Printed Matter, the coffee shop Bluestone Lane, and the Pace Gallery.

I’ve lived in NYC the past six years but never go to Chelsea much, so I was really excited to get to check out some new places and walk along the water. The Pace Gallery was unfortunately closed, but my friend and I managed to check out the Whitney Museum for a bit before it closed for the day.

I haven’t been to the Whitney since 2018, which is a shame because I’ve seen some really interesting installations there like Blade Runner Autoencoded by Terrance Broad. I saw The Labyrinth by Robert Vickrey which reminded me of matte paintings you’d see in 1980s horror and sci-fi films.

I then went to Printed Matter, which I was really excited for because I collect art books and graphic novels. Whenever I go to a new city I try to find an interesting book store or indie comic shop.
I found a huge indie section in Printed Matter, there were lots of unique handmade comics and zines. One in particular stood out to me because it was collection of screenshots of someone’s Skyrim game stats and items, the tiny zine even had a picture of their in-game wife and kids, which brought me back to high school when I was addicted to Skyrim. I also found this book Immortal which is about a biologist that goes missing, and I bought it because it reminded me of the Southern Reach Trilogy, a series that inspired my animated thesis film.

We then went to grab coffee from Bluestone Lane and saw the sunset on the water. At Bluestone my friend ran into another actress in the show they’re both currently filming, it’s funny how small the city actually is.

We walked around for a while since the weather was so nice, and then headed to Xian’s Famous Foods to grab dinner when we saw a bunch of geese listening to EDM music.
Thank you for the itinerary! I’ll be going back to Chelsea soon so I can see the Pace Gallery, and I’m excited to read my new book! 🙂
